major

Animals have always been my passion every since I was little and can remember. Growing up I had many different pets and loved them so dearly. When I am playing with them or taking care of them, I feel like I am doing my purpose in life. So, as a child kid and even as I got older, I said I was going to be a veterinarian. Then, when I got in high school I had a thing for being in water, so I wanted to be a marine biologist. I kept that dream going all the way until I got into in college and found that the University of Memphis did not have that as a major. From there I wanted to go back to being a veterinarian, but they do not have that as a major either. If I wanted to come close to being a vet I would have to major in biology and transfer to another school and I did not want that at all.
My new major became criminal justice because I had been watching the animal cops show on animal planet and said hey…I could be a animal cop and help get the people off the street that’s hurting the animals as well as be around animals. Once I told my dad of that plan he was not to excited bout. He wanted to know how much they made and so on, and preferred that I be a nurse something he knows make decent money. I felt very hurt because to me it didn’t matter how much my major made. It matter that I was going to be doing something I loved and plus I will have a good degree I could also find other jobs.

  1. Caneshia,

Listen to your heart. We spend far too much time working to be unhappy with our work. My advice to you would be to study a subject that interests you and that capitalizes on your strengths so that you can graduate. If you love animals and are good in sciences, you will need to go to veterinary school regardless of your major as an undergraduate. The U of M lists some of these programs on their website (http://www.aavmc.org/students_admissions/vet_schools.htm). I am unsure what the requirements are to be an animal cop.

If I can be of further assistance, let me know.
