Stress

I am currently taking 17 hours of class and working twenty hours a week. Now for any person that is not a bad schedule at all, but I seem to be having difficulties with it. All my classes are at very decent times like on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I don’t have class until 11:30. Tuesdays and Thursdays I have classes from 8am to 12:45, which also includes my Tuesday’s class at 5 and Thursday’s class at 1:15. I work graveyard shift every night from 12 to 4am every night except Sunday nights which is Monday mornings. My job title is called a desk assistant and I work in the dorms which is very convenient to me since I stay on campus, but my Tuesday and Thursday shifts make my life a little hard. I have a early 8:00 class on those days and do not get off until 4:00 or even later sometimes when the next desk assistant do not show up. Then, I have to get up at 7 to get ready for class and that means I only like 3 hours of sleep which is not good. I be so sleepy when I go to class, but I have to go because my teacher takes attendance. In my two classes right after that, my teachers do not take attendance, so I hardly make it to them, but I still do all my assignments though. I really want to give up my shifts permanently, so I can be well rested for class, but it is my only job and I like having the money. I think getting rest is so much important, but I really do not know what to do with my schedule this semester. My parents think I should ask for better hours and give up my late one. I wish I could do that, but I cannot because everyone hours is already set…so I am stuck being miserable.

  1. Caneshia,

Do take care of your body. When our bodies are not nurtured, our minds cannot learn. What would happen if you spoke up and asked for different hours? Let me know if I can ever be of assistance.

  2. I would suggest asking for different hours as well. Considering you are employed by the University, I don't see why it would be a problem in working with your academic schedule. Sleep is essential in this time of your life and so is time management. Give asking for different hours a shot. What is the worse that could happen

  3. Girl, now lets think about this. First off you are a human and student before you are a worker or anything else. Being a human means getting the righ amonunt of sleep at night and being able to produce the n things that come with having sleep. If you want to continue having a normal life without having a problem come up where you get diagnosed with sleep-nomia because of being awake during those hours or even seriously fail a class then re-consider your scheldule. I can try to help you find a job that could work with your scheldule while staying on campus if they tell you they can't help you out. As much as I know the money looks great , you have to think long term about this. Ask first. If nothing changes, resign and call me.
